Portfolio

My First Website
This is the first website I ever designed. I keep it in my portfolio as a friendly reminder to myself about how far I've come. For its day it wasn't a bad site. It's all-at-once poorly designed and not that bad. I've yet to find a another piece of my life that so strongly takes me back to the time when I made it.
Creating things is an innate part of being a human being, and when you give something your best it has a way of leaving it's own impression on you. I try to recreat that experience every time I design a site, as design is a deeply personal art form.

Film, Faith, and Justice
Avode Designs was asked to come in at the eleventh hour of the Film, Faith & Justice project to save the development and back end programming. The design isn't mine at all, but it serves as an example should you want me to come in and be a forensic/emergency developer for you. All of the scripting and content is my creation. We can certainly do back-end only programming for you if you have an "in-house" designer already. My hourly rate remains the same, regardless of the project, so you can be confident that I will give you a fair price, even though I wouldn't be designing the entirety of your website.

The Other Journal
Avode Designs was asked to develop the front end for The Other Journal. I created the entire user interface as you see it on this site. I did not do any back end programming for this website, as they had their own "in-house" developer. This is something I can certainly do for you if you want. Many companies have very capable devlopers, but no one who does interfaces well. I can certainly be a interface-only design firm for you, should you choose. My hourly rate remains the same, regardless of the project, so you can be confident that I will give you a fair price, even though I wouldn't be designing the entirety of your website.

Maybe.org
Avode Designs was asked to come in after the initial design work was done on Maybe.org. Even though the "concept" design of this website is not mine, a substantial amount of the design work on this site is mine. I also did all of the back-end programming for this website. This website was initially stranded on an inadequate web-based content management system called "Squarespace". Avode Designs "migrated" the website away from the content management system to allow for a more custom design. If you're stuck on a "cookie-cutter" content managment system and are now realizing that you need a more custom approach, I can help to grab your website, intact, and move it to another location.

Espresso Picolinos
Avode Designs was asked to come in to design, develop, launch, and market Espresso Picolinos from start to finish. The company sought to differentiate their cafe/bakery brand from their restaurant brand by creating a website. Within days, local blogs had picked up on the difference, and the local community is now realizing that the location also has a cafe.
Brand differentiation is a very powerful mechanism for building business. Not everybody may be interested in your umbrella brand, and may be associating it with a particular good or service. Brand differentiation can be very effective mechanism for garnering extra business for a unique good or service that you have, that the a target demographic may not be aware of.

Anne and Andrew's Wedding
What can you say about favors to friends? I put it in my portfolio, because I think it's good design work, especially since it has total congruity with their wedding invitations. I am not in the habit of doing wedding websites though, so, unless you are my friend, don't get any ideas.

Radio Urge
This website (still viewable at radiourge.com) was a project I started with a client who ran into liquidity issues, and so it is unfinished (and will remain so). It is by no means complete. It still needed a great deal of work when I stopped working on it. However, I am still proud of the design, and so I put it on my portfolio as an example of my own design work.
I really want to emphasize this site's non-completion. Most of the features don't work and the back-end programming was not even started yet. Howwever, as I mentioned earlier, the design is a good representation of what I can do. If you are going to view the site with Internet Explorer there will be some bugs.

About

Nathan Sweet

My name is Nathan Sweet. I am, currently, the sole employee at Avode Designs. I received my Bachelor of Arts at the University of Wisconsin in "Semitic Linguistics". I have been a student of programming and design ever since my dad and I (mostly my dad) programmed a game resembling Monopoly® on an old DOS system in the early 1990s.
I started Avode Designs in late 2009 out of a desire to more firmly root myself in all aspects of web development, rather than just programming. Avode Designs seeks a wholistic approach to web development (the word "Avode" is an ancient Hebrew word that means "wholistic work") by considering all aspects of development before development even begins.
In my free time, I enjoy reading and writing, playing my guitar, hiking, and spending time with my wife and friends.

Website Design, Custom CMS, SEO, Pay-per-click, Copywriting, Print Design, blah, blah, blah! I do it all, but so does everybody else. If you're serious about your business, a simple list of capabilities shouldn't sway your decision to hire a web firm. If you have a special request I can gaurantee any web firm will bend over backwards to simply get your business (especially right now).
My approach to development is driven by a desire to create quality, wholistically integrated design and programming together! Many modern websites are piece-meal affairs that are often stagnated by the lack of knowledge one area of web development may have about another. By creating a more wholistic approach to web development Avode Designs seeks to mitigate the limitations, mistakes, and misconceptions that take place between the initial concept and the final result.      My quote process will give me the information I need to establish a price I can communicate to you. I do this because I know your time is valuable. So, I want to give you the most salient piece of information you need (namely, the price) to decide whether or not you can initiate the project.

The process takes approximately ten minutes to complete. Once you're done I will ask you whether you want to be contacted by phone or email, and then I will contact you with your estimate.

The questionnaire has four different sections that deal with the content, style, and infrastructure of your website. While there aren't very many questions, some of the questions may require some time to answer. This is to ensure that I can give you a very accurate estimate* and, later, a very accurate proposal and contract. When you're finished you can submit your answers and I will take about one business day to respond. Thank you.

*I cannot gaurantee the quote as final. Given even minor changes, the price will change, but I hope you can use your free quote as a tool in invesitgating your website needs.
